During 2020 comprehensive multi-disciplinary surveys were undertaken at Salford Central Station in Greater Manchester. This was to aid the design of three additional platforms at the station. The survey scope consisted of the following elements.

• Establishment of survey control to TPEN11 Project Snake Grid.
• Full Topographical Survey at track level, street level and viaduct arches.
• Internal topographical and floor plan survey within the concourse and retail units.
• 3D Laser Scan at track level, street level, concourse, and retail units.
• Utility Survey (GPR & EML) Survey of Platforms 2/3, street level, internal concourse, subway and retail units.
• Drainage & CCTV Survey
• OCS Heights and Stagger Survey

Surveys were conducted between August and October over a total of 20 shifts. Works were undertaken both on and off the railway infrastructure with on-track access and provision of safety critical staff supported by InoRail Ltd.

Key project deliverables included a multi-disciplinary survey report containing.

• Control Grid Processing Report.
• 3D topographical survey model in MicroStation format.
• Registered Point cloud in POD format.
• Interpretive wire frame modelling to MOT 1.
• Utility survey overlay model
• Permanent Way Gauging Profiles
• OCS Survey including detailed heights and staggers

InoRail Ltd worked collaboratively with Transport for Greater Manchester, Mott MacDonald and Network Rail to ensure the survey works were completed safely and to project programme.

InoRail undertook all survey works, prepared site safety paperwork and provided safety critical staff. Mott MacDonald (designer) assisted InoRail through an advisory on-site role and the production of a survey specification.

Key risks and general advice were briefed prior to the commencement of works via a toolbox talk when working in the public realm. On track or lineside safety briefings were undertaken by the COSS prior to going on or near the line.
