The project scope involved a multi-million-pound platform extension scheme at Wigan North Western Station to provide passengers travelling to Manchester and Leeds with longer and more reliable trains. The work, as part of the Great North Rail Project, entailed the lengthening of platform 3 so it was able to accommodate longer four-carriage trains. Specific scope of works included;

• Platform 3 Extension
• Removal of Platform 2 line
• De-commissioning of OHLE
