Project Description

The project involved intervention at six key areas in Scotland ranging from Heavy S&C refurbishment, Level Crossing design and traditional Track Tamping. This involved;

  • Challenging programme required flexibility and quick mobilisation to meet requirements
  • Acted as Track Design Lead
  • Permanent Way Design (Form-A/B)
  • Bespoke design solutions including heavy refurbishment of S&C, level crossing and platform interfaces, track tamping and localised track lowering
  • From feasibility to detailed design then construction support and as-built analysis
  • Last minute changes in scope were successfully incorporated into the designs without impacting construction dates

The project presented a number of engineering challenges such as;

  • Installation of a new contraflexure turnout on electrified line constrained at low mileage end by a “foul clearance” bridge with substandard ballast depths and a crossover, at the high mileage end interface with Station platform
  • Grounding assessment and specification of new Level Crossing components – one particular site (shown centre left) was adjacent to a platform which had existing non-compliant heights and offsets
  • Ballast renewal and ironwork replacement of a turnout which extended beneath an overline structure
  • Track Tamping design >1,000m delivered as a CAT 0 site which featured tie-in points adjacent to Underbridges which had failed loading assessments

Working closely with Avidrail and fostering a good working relationship with the Network Rail works delivery team to develop robust solutions in accordance with the project scope.
